This article appeared in Psychology today. Though the DSM is primarily American it's influence can be felt around the world. While suffering is universal mental illness isn't. Some of the diagnosis in the DSM are not universal. Those conditions do not exist in certain cultures as they pre condition that facilitate the development of some mental illness don't exist.
